The activities of The Hoplite Association are first and foremost aimed at undertaking reenactment events which will consist of a mixture of static display, living history, skills, crafts and military demonstration and public arena based activities, predominantly within the UK.

We seek to portray all aspects of the Greek sphere of activity throughout the period 490 - 430 B.C. and as such would welcome any member who would like to recreate either Greek or Greek ally - which also includes Greek enemies as the Greeks had a habit of fighting against each other! The one, overriding, requirement is that you seek to dress and equip yourself in as accurate a manner as possible.

The Association has its own authenticity guidelines and works on the principle of quality not quantity. This does not mean that recreation needs to be expensive but it does mean that we will not accept an attitude of 'it is close enough' or 'it will do'. The golden rule being it is better to go without than to compromise.

Help can be given in all aspects of recreation and you will be given every assistance in ensuring that you do not waste money on inappropriate purchases. We have already made just about all the mistakes going!

At the current time we are actively recruiting new members, but these can currently only be accepted from people who will be able to participate in full or in part with our UK event activities. As a consequence, it is regretted that we are only accepting applications from overseas residents who are based in mainland Europe and are prepared to commit to attending at least one UK based event per year.

Current membership fees are (per annum - renewable by April each year):
Individual: £15.00
Family: £25.00
The Hoplite Association is a non-profit making organisation and funds are used to pay for insurance, fund the provision of society equipment and to cover the basic costs of operation.

We can also offer a trial event membership for a fee of £5 (refundable against Full membership if you decide to join). If you wish to 'try before you buy', this needs to be authorised in advance of an event and you will be expected to abide by all Association rules once at the event. Loan clothing can be provided in order to ensure that you can comply with authenticity requirements.
