The Hoplite Association recently returned to Military Odyssey at the Kent Showground, Detling, for another excellent weekend of living history.
Military Odyssey brings together re-enactors from a huge range of historical periods, and once again we were there representing the world of ancient Greece. Our display included hoplite arms and armour, clothing and equipment, pottery and everyday objects, as well as demonstrations and discussions about Greek warfare, society and daily life.
Throughout the weekend, members spoke with visitors about how hoplites fought and equipped themselves, demonstrated elements of drill and combat, and gave people the chance to see reproductions of ancient equipment at close quarters. The more domestic and medical side of Greek life also attracted plenty of interest and helped show that there was much more to the ancient world than the battlefield.
As always, Military Odyssey was also a great opportunity to meet other re-enactment groups, catch up with friends and spend a full weekend immersed in living history.
Many thanks to everyone who took part, helped organise and run the display, and came over to visit us during the weekend. We are already looking forward to the next one.
